WE’VE GOT YOU COVERED

Like filmmakers of recent years, musicians have lost originality and have run out of ideas for new music sounds. When this happens, we hear music that is regenerated by new artists, and this is known as COVERING.

Now I love cover songs. I love hearing how artists can take and old song and modernize it or make it more lively than the original. But there are also too many times that an artist covers a song in a “Why the hell did they remake that song” light. If you’re going to cover it, remake it. Don’t sing it and play it exactly as the original…otherwise, what was the point of taking the time to remake it?

You’re going to start seeing a lot of entries here having to do with covers, mainly because it’s the way of the world now. Original ideas are few and far between and there’s a big risk in artists killing the legacy of once cherished bands and excellent songs.

But, I will be the first to say that there’s nothing like hearing a song completely re-done in a way you never thought a song can be heard. Those are the cover songs we will be covering in this blog, the good ones.

But be forewarned: In order to put the good covers in a good light, I can’t do that without making reference to the bad ones. So let’s get on with it….

Chief,

Why the hell aren't people commenting on your brilliance?

I LOVE to hear covers. Like you, I like to hear someone OWN a cover - Hendrix's version of "Like A Rolling Stone," for instance. But I also like ones that are not so original, like the Oasis version of "Cum on Feel the Noize." I just like to hear different voices and personalities play familiar material. It's hard to do a song exactly like someone has done before, anyway.

As long as you're going to talk about bad covers, how about the millions of bad records Rod Stewart is selling at Starbucks?

Check out this link for some fun and wacky homages to other peoples' songs:

First of all, not to cover the King or anything but "Thank you vrry muuuch." I am brilliant and it's about time someone finally realized it. :-)

But seriously, you hit on several good points. But the Rod Stewart thing just kills me.

If in the early 70's when Rod Stewart was in Faces rocking with Ron Wood, Ronnie Lane etc., and you told him he'd be in adult contemporary purgatory pumping through the laptop toting caffeine overdosing veins of Starbucks patrons paying $12.50 for a large Mocha Crapaccino 18 years later, he would have probably tore you a new one.

He hasn't just become old and unoriginal, he's completely sold out.

Hendrix, naturally could have made anything his own with that Stratacaster of his (probably the wrong brand of guitar but it's the first one that came to mind so don't hate me).

I had no idea Oasis did the Quiet Riot cover. Is this a new album of theirs?

Peace out and thanks for the website. Hope all is well Sir Hilly.
